I went with my friend Chelsey to a deaf expo on Saturday, and the Arizona Deaf Theater Co. wants me to act in their production of "The Odd Couple."

They said if i don't want to act - I can help out with the technical side- which is probably what I'll do since I don't really know sign language.

It's so interesting seeing people interact with one another. I feel like it really was like entering a foreign country, where the people are more sociable believe it or not, and very affectionately tactile because they communicate physically. I saw deaf people with deaf children and hearing people with deaf relatives, etc.

Most of the booths were mainstream companies that sent deaf or fluent signer representatives to offer services to the deaf, and I met this one guy who had two deaf parents. He had a speech impediment because basically he was born into a silent home and didn't have a whole lot of early speech development that other kids do. Since most kids develop those skills from birth through their third year or so, you can imagine what it would be like for a child who hasn't really communicated verbally until kindergarten. It was very interesting.

I didn't know this either, but apparently deafness is very hereditary (perhaps dominant). This one representative from Merril Lynch was completely deaf and all of his siblings and parents were as well.

I wonder if deaf people think in signs or "sign outloud" in their heads as they read. If not, I'm betting that they read a lot faster than most people. The main thing slowing us down is not reading comprehension, it's that we insist on saying the whole word out in our heads as if we don't already know it. Those who are deaf from birth don't really have to worry about that because they don't know what sound is at all anyway. Or what any letter sounds like for that matter. They just know that each word means a certain thing. It seems more efficient.

Anyway, I'm supposed to be meeting those guys for the play tomorrow evening at 5:30... I don't have to work tomorrow so I'm sure that wouldn't be a problem, I'm just very nervous that I won't be able to communicate very well with them.

But I think most people feel that way when they go to a foreign country with a foreign language and culture.

Some outtakes of the oscar talk between Josh and me (Keep in mind that the computer is down stairs, so he mainly was telling me when it was back on - or what was on it just in case it was nothing interesting.):

Junglebuttons2 [8:17 PM]: no i didn't
AcousticThrenody [8:18 PM]: man oh man
AcousticThrenody [8:18 PM]: it's an AMAZING film
AcousticThrenody [8:18 PM]: she was great in it
Junglebuttons2 [8:18 PM]: perhaps she'll finally win tonight
Junglebuttons2 [8:18 PM]: i want to write a film for her
AcousticThrenody [8:18 PM]: me too
AcousticThrenody [8:18 PM]: mine'll kick yours' ass
Junglebuttons2 [8:19 PM]: or - we could collaborate

Junglebuttons2 [8:20 PM]: in my head i feel like they are the same evil force
AcousticThrenody [8:21 PM]: i like selma better

(I didn't say it...)
AcousticThrenody [8:41 PM]: so i'm getting bored with these awards...there should be a bigger variety of movies being honored
Junglebuttons2 [8:42 PM]: last year was bad
Junglebuttons2 [8:42 PM]: for movies
Junglebuttons2 [8:42 PM]: on the whole - i mean there were some stars
Junglebuttons2 [8:42 PM]: but i was disappointed with million dollar baby on the whole

Junglebuttons2 [9:09 PM]: :-\
Junglebuttons2 [9:09 PM]: well - i for one love hillary.
Junglebuttons2 [9:10 PM]: and so far both my predictions for million dollar baby have been true.
AcousticThrenody [9:10 PM]: i don't think i've seen her in anything
Junglebuttons2 [9:10 PM]: for morgan and hillary that is
AcousticThrenody [9:10 PM]: but she does seem great
Junglebuttons2 [9:10 PM]: yeah - you should hear her story
Junglebuttons2 [9:10 PM]: she lived in a trailer park and her mom lost her job i think.
Junglebuttons2 [9:11 PM]: so her mom packed everything up and they went to hollywood with $75
Junglebuttons2 [9:11 PM]: and went to phone books for agents and finally found one that would take her
Junglebuttons2 [9:11 PM]: and voila
AcousticThrenody [9:11 PM]: nice
Junglebuttons2 [9:11 PM]: she's won every award for which she's ever been nominated.
AcousticThrenody [9:12 PM]: let's write a role for her someday, too
Junglebuttons2 [9:12 PM]: yeah
Junglebuttons2 [9:12 PM]: because i adore her...

Junglebuttons2 [9:30 PM]: um
Junglebuttons2 [9:30 PM]: you're so cold.
Junglebuttons2 [9:31 PM]: charlize could be brown and... turquoise - she's beautiful.
AcousticThrenody [9:33 PM]: eh
AcousticThrenody [9:34 PM]: damn, that woman must be ancient
Junglebuttons2 [9:39 PM]: for real
Junglebuttons2 [9:39 PM]: i came to the calculation last night that Clint Eastwood is approximately 113 years old.
Junglebuttons2 [9:39 PM]: of course, exact measurements can't be certain.
Junglebuttons2 [9:39 PM]: so that makes her at LEAST like 130.

---

AcousticThrenody [9:42 PM]: they gotta honor the old fart before he dies
Junglebuttons2 [9:42 PM]: yeah
Junglebuttons2 [9:42 PM]: martin scorcese will win sometime soon.
Junglebuttons2 [9:42 PM]: he's not as old though
Junglebuttons2 [9:42 PM]: or haggard
AcousticThrenody [9:42 PM]: yeah
Junglebuttons2 [9:43 PM]: i guess i'm happy for him though, he's never won jack. but i saw that movie last night... and uh... should not have won best picture.

Junglebuttons2 [9:43 PM]: anyway - that was fun.
Junglebuttons2 [9:43 PM]: good times.
Junglebuttons2 [9:44 PM]: i can't wait to sweep the oscars. i hope i'm still young enough to kick my heels when i accept the award.
AcousticThrenody [9:44 PM]: haha
AcousticThrenody [9:44 PM]: next year, baby...you'll be young enough

Junglebuttons2 [8:57 PM]: 1) they are so fast these days
Junglebuttons2 [8:58 PM]: 2) yowsers
AcousticThrenody [8:58 PM]: it was the featured pic

I'm not sure I have much to add. I'm sad Natalie Portman didn't win for Closer. I went twice to see it - the first time I didn't finish it. But when i went back the second time, I realized the brilliance of the dialogue - particularly the bit about identity. Every word is deliberate.

Having said that, at least she lost to someone like Cate Blanchett who deserves every award under the sun as far as I'm concerned (uh, and I think she has them).

Honestly, that's the only award I really cared about. Oh, and I was excited to see Whatshisface win best original screenplay for Eternal Sunshine even though I've never seen it. Meg and Josh both seem to adore it so... I'm sure I do too... I need to buy that junk. Soon enough friends... Soon enough...

All my predictions for Million Dollar Baby actually came true except one. I don't think it was the best picture of the year... I saw it last night - and usually the most recent movie in my mind, is the one I want to win because it's the one that I remember the most. Well not this time. Clint is lackluster in it - though Hillary and Morgan are like... utterly mesmerizing. Morgan's voice is astounding (he narrates).

And that's it for now. I'm glad it's over. Charlize is beautiful, but Natalie is... my favorite tonight.

I might be going home for a wedding a week from tomorrow.

I fly too damn much. I'm getting really sick of it actually, but I always love the destinations too vastly to give up plane rides. Tampa, I love you.

Maybe there'll be another horrible movie on this flight. Score.

I've been doing construction lately. It's the best making money doing something you love. And it's slightly less awesome making money doing something you could live without. But still, the money part is needed, so it's great. And I totally seem like a construction worker, yeah? Um... Ok seriously, who's laughing? Stop it! I actually did years of construction in high school.

And you would think that I had much to say after not really saying anything for so long. I thought so too. Apparently we were wrong.

Oh yeah - appreciate your friends. We only have one life.

The guys' prayer circle before the wedding... I'm glad I didn't miss this. There are a lot of these prayer photos.

"Caring Is Creepy"

I think i'll go home and mull this over
Before i cram it down my throat
At long last it's crashed, the colossal mass
Has broken up into bits in my moat.

Lift the mattress off the floor
Walk the cramps off
Go meander in the cold
Hail to your dark skin
Hiding the fact you're dead again
Undeneath the power lines seeking shade
Far above our heads are the icy heights that contain all reason

It's a luscious mix of words and tricks
That let us bet when you knew we should fold
On rocks i dreamt of where we'd stepped
And the whole mess of roads we're now on.

Hold your glass up, hold it in
Never betray the way you've always known it is.
One day i'll be wondering how
I got so old just wondering how
I never got cold wearing nothing in the snow.

This is way beyond my remote concern
Of being condescending

All these squawking birds won't quit.
Building nothing, laying bricks.

I didn't think a film could just...

I have never experienced such...

It was by far the number one film I have ever witnessed. American Beauty has changed my fickle mind so that I can finally have a number one.

My favorite picture of the guys...

and fredo getting help with his tie.

Tuesday, February 15, 2005

I love how everything is in motion except the girl in the red coat who looks like she's looking at me. She's the only vibrant piece of color here, and it reminds me of Schindler's List. This is part of a collection I'm doing called "A Dream I Had Once." This is the main staricase at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

And this one's called A Crush I Had Once... Haha, just kidding. (No i'm not.)

I'm still shaking. And I can't do anything to change it for him.

Junglebuttons2 [3:25 AM]: wait, and french toast beats pancakes any day of the week.
Junglebuttons2 [3:25 AM]: waffles are a distant third.
FallenStarz182 [3:26 AM]: i agree
FallenStarz182 [3:26 AM]: if i were on death row Hash Browns would be my last meal

FallenStarz182 [3:26 AM]: i'd probly have a side of baked potatoe

Mr. Damien Rice, people. Please listen to the whole thing. At first, the file seems like it's skipping, but it's not, just wait for it. And the video may not work after like 10 seconds, but who cares. The song is still there. And it's an amazing one.

1PM: Sitting here listening to Nate & James, who I will meet and photograph at this wedding in a few hours. And the people I'm staying with want to pay me to come back every year and go skiing and take their pictures. So awesome... I'll be back soon.
